Join me for this fun exploration of values. This Oil Rub-Out Thursday Afternoon Class will meet for 4 weeks at Tubac School of Fine Art LLC Beginning October 12, 2017. If you struggle with your paintings, take the color out and concentrate on the values, the edges, the brush work and composition. Your full-color paintings will benefit from this in depth look at values. Lou Maestas shared this technique with me as an intro to painting in oils.
Value relationships are so important in a painting, it’s what gives the image form. Once you understand this you can more easily concentrate on the many other factors that make up a successful painting. I’ve yet to master his dexterity, speed, and flair. However, full color.
I am a devoted student of the technique and it has helped me tremendously. I want to share his method, tips, and tricks along with a number of my own with you because I think you’ll love it, too.
I’ll be teaching a 4 week series on oil rub out a technique coined by our original founder Lou Maestas. The technique dates back to Michelangelo. Using just one color of paint to cover the canvas you’ll learn how to sculpt your subject using old bed sheets and clean paint brushes. You’ll be amazed to see the canvas come to life and learn a great deal of the importance of value and accuracy.
This can be a final work of art or your underpainting for a full-color piece. I will also show you some interesting effects using a variety of recipes, shared with me by Lou Maestas, using oil painting mediums.
Thursday Afternoons beginning October 12, 2017 $ 240

The beauty of God’s creation is my inspiration. I see His animals as a blessing, an example of The Creator’s love.
When watching animals, I get lost, mesmerized by their expressions. I see into the soul of the subject.
The rubout technique I practice builds a foundation by applying a solid background and rubbing out the lighter values with a cloth or adding paint to create darker values.
In my paintings, I strive to express the blessings the animals share with me.
